Each year, the Sylvia Fedoruk Canadian Centre for Nuclear Innovation (Fedoruk Centre) invites eligible Project Leaders to submit proposals for research projects, which have the potential to advance the Fedoruk Centre's purpose. The 2020 Call for Proposals, Awards Guide and submission package were issued on October 2, 2020. Funding decisions were issued on January 29, 2021. The next call for proposals is planned in October, 2021, subject to availability of funds.

The Fedoruk Centre 2020 Awards Guide outlines the purpose of the 2020 Call for Proposals, procedure for submission and evaluation of Proposals, and conditions for a Project award. Chair in the Department of Economics, Justice, and Policy Studies at Mount Royal University (Calgary, AB)
Duane Bratt is a political science Professor educated at the Universities of Windsor (BA 1991, MA 1992) and Alberta (Ph.D 1996). He teaches in the area of international relations and Canadian public policy. His primary research interest is in the area of Canadian nuclear policy. Recent publications include: co-editor, Orange Chinook: Politics in the New Alberta (University of Calgary Press, 2019), co-editor, Readings in Canadian Foreign Policy: Classic Debates and New Ideas 3rd edition (Oxford University Press, 2015) and author of Canada, the Provinces, and the Global Nuclear Revival (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2012). Current projects include the risk assessment of Canada’s nuclear waste site selection process.
Duane is also a regular commentator on political events.
NSERC/UNENE Industrial Research Chair in Nuclear Safety Analysis, McMaster University
John Luxat is a Professor in the Department of Engineering Physics and holds the NSERC/UNENE Industrial Research Chair in Nuclear Safety Analysis at McMaster University. He obtained his B.Sc. (Eng.) and M.Sc. (Eng.) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, South Africa in 1967 and 1969, respectively. In 1972 he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor, Ontario. He has been a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario since 1974. Prior to joining McMaster University in 2004 he had 32 years experience working in many areas of nuclear safety and nuclear engineering in the Canadian nuclear industry, as Vice President, Technical Methods at Nuclear Safety Solutions Limited in Toronto and, prior to that, as Manager of Nuclear Safety Technology at Ontario Power Generation.
In 2004 he was awarded the Canadian Nuclear Society/Canadian Nuclear Association Outstanding Contribution Award for his significant contributions to safety analysis and licensing of CANDU reactors. In 2011 he received the Technical Achievement Award of the American Nuclear Society Thermal Hydraulics Division, a national award of the Society. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
John is a member of the Advisory Board of the International Association for Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (IASMiRT); and a Board member of the American Association for Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (AASMiRT). He is a member of the Advisory Board of Terrestrial Energy Inc. a private company developing the IMSR molten salt reactor concept. In 2012 he was elected a member of the International Nuclear Energy Academy and currently serves as chair of the Academy. He is the 2018/2019 President of the Canadian Nuclear Society, a position he previously held in 2005/2006.
Associate Professor, Departments of Medicine and Radiology, McMaster University
Dr. Katherine Zukotynski is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Radiology at McMaster University and an Associate Member of the School of Biomedical Engineering at McMaster University. She is affiliated with several hospitals including Children’s Hospital Boston.
After completing an undergraduate degree in Engineering Science at the University of Toronto, Dr. Zukotynski completed medical school followed by a residency in radiology, also at the University of Toronto. Subsequently, she completed nuclear medicine training through the Joint Program in Nuclear Medicine at Harvard Medical School and most recently was awarded a PhD through the Institute for Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. She is a Professional Engineer and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. She is board certified in nuclear cardiology, as well as in nuclear medicine and radiology, in both the United States and Canada.
Dr. Zukotynski is involved in medical imaging research. Her main areas of research are in PET/CT, particularly as it relates to oncology, neurodegenerative disease and machine learning. She received the RSNA Research and Education Foundation Roentgen Resident/ Fellow Research Award first as a radiology resident and then as a nuclear medicine resident. She held an RSNA Research Scholar Grant from 2012-2014, and currently holds several grants, predominantly for molecular imaging in prostate cancer.
Dr. Zukotynski is also actively involved in the leadership of several imaging societies. She is Chair of the Radiologic Society of North America (RSNA) Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Track for the annual meeting program planning committee, as well as Chair of the Research and Education Public Relations Committee. She is also Secretary of the American College of Nuclear Medicine (ACNM), immediate past Treasurer/Secretary of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), and immediate past president of the SNMMI PET Center of Excellence as well as the SNMMI Eastern Great Lakes Chapter. She was awarded a Distinguished Educator Award from the SNMMI in 2020.
Alastair McIvor graduated in Engineering in the UK in 1989. He worked for the UK Atomic Energy Authority in research and development, then specialized in safety analysis primarily for nuclear power reactors. Alastair became a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1996.
At Chalk River Laboratories, Alastair was the Section Head for safety analysis, a member of the administration team for the Canadian Neutron Beam Centre, and the Manager responsible for nuclear licenses for several reactors. He was Director of Corporate Operations during the four-year restructuring of Chalk River Laboratories by the federal government, before becoming the Senior Director of Operations at the NRU research reactor where he was responsible for nuclear operations and radiation protection. Alastair qualified as Chief Nuclear Officer for Chalk River Laboratories in 2017.
Alastair then worked for the United Nations at the International Atomic Energy Agency where he supported the development of international nuclear safety standards for research reactors. He was also a Senior Consultant with Modus Strategic Solutions. Since January 2021, Alastair is a Senior Analyst with Kinectrics, providing expertise on nuclear safety and regulatory compliance to Canadian and international clients.

Funding assistance may be available for travel to events or training sessions that support the objectives of the Fedoruk Centre.
The Sylvia Fedoruk Canadian Centre for Nuclear Innovation (Fedoruk Centre) will review requests from eligible institutions, on an ongoing basis, for support for engagement activities (hosting workshops, training, outreach or similar events) that will further the purpose of the Fedoruk Centre.
